A Long Time Ago, In A Cinema Down the Road

I remember when I was 5 or 6 I saw my first film from a series that has changed my life in ways I could not possibly perceive. Soon after I heard that they were planning to make new films, not just the re-mastered versions I was going to go see in the cinema, three brand new films. The first one was going to come out in 1999.

I was aware of rumours, but I was 8, didn’t have ready access to the internet boards where these discussions took place, but I knew something was coming. Something big. Something that was to, not only start a big journey for me but also, launch a new journey for so many people around the world.

Today marks ten years of that event. For ten years we have had knowledge that we could only have dreamed of. For ten years we have known for sure the past of some of cinema’s greatest heroes and villains. For ten years we have known Jar Jar Binks. Ten years ago. May 19th 1999. Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace hit our screens. I haven’t looked back since. Well, not much.
