There is Still Good in Him
It was aid of Darth Vader and now it can be said of the newest Darth of them all, Darth Weinstein.
You may have read my previous two posts on this, here and here, where you can probably find enough on the background of this whole debate to save me from reitterating it now. However there has been a development today that has probably meant that you heard a unanimous roar of happiness erupt from your nearest group of Star Wars fans. We have our film, well, we will.
If you want to read the full press release, then TheForce.Net have it, however the important parts for those who have been following this story with interest, especially those who emailed Weinstein, are:
(March 24, 200
The Weinstein Company announced today that it plans to jointly release two versions of its highly anticipated film, “Fanboys,” on home video, with the Company exploring options for its theatrical release.
…
“Over the last few weeks we have received a tremendous amount of input from Star Wars fans nationwide,” stated Matthew Frankel, Chief Communications Officer, The Weinstein Company. “While the later version tested very well with audiences, the grassroots support we have received for the first version simply cannot be ignored. We are very excited to launch these two films and look forward to giving the fans the opportunity to see both versions.”
So there you have it. We Star Wars fans will get our film, on DVD if not in the cinema.
The interesting comment is that about the second version testing very well with audiences. Lets remember that there were no protests based around the original cancer plot. Okay so perhaps it was a downer and just not funny, but it was central to the plot, as I have said before, and will continue to say. However when your main audience say a re-cut is bad, and organise a boycott, does that say ‘We love your film’ to Weinstein?
This follows the StarWars.com poll about the film, so is there the possibility that Lucas had something to say on the matter. Or maybe Weinstein didn’t notice the size of the problem until the numbers came out on that poll. Or maybe the volume of emails sent by the Stop Darth Weinstein campaign helped a little.
On the mention of Stop Darth Weinstein I must point to their most recent news post. Theirboycott continues until the fans get control of their movie back. I agree, almost entirely with them. Steve Brill should not be allowed near this film. It isn’t his, just think about what would have happened had Mr. Lucas not had control of his film. I will disagree with the campaign on the point of a ‘life time boycott by all Star Wars fans’. I will only boycott the re-cut of this film, and I’m a fan.
The film will be released, that is undoubtedly good news. If it is released in theatres it will be even better news, however there is one thing. Is this a little bit too much like ‘OK, you’re annoying us now, have your little fan movie and leave us alone.’ or isit an honest attempt to please fans. Well, we shall see.
